Thomas Lang is quite an inspirational drummer. At least he is to me.
Yes, he’s got incredible technique and he can dazzle with fast complex playing, odd time signatures and all kinds of ambidextrous challenging ostinato patterns! But that’s not what impresses or inspires me the most.
What I am most impressed with and inspired by can be seen in this video that he just put out (for PDP Drums). The song is called “Time”.
Thomas Lang really brings the essence of what I remember discovering when I first heard Neil Peart and got into Rush. The drum parts are meticulously composed…. they are at once complex but they were very musical!!
Since YouTube has become such a huge platform that we can all post videos to, discover new artists and learn new things on it has enable many of us to find inspiration!
Drums are often seen solely as a backing instrument and often times there is a focus on the physical/rudimentary aspect of the instrument… “look how fast I can play the 5 stroke roll!”… those kinds of things are great to an extent. I’ll just stop there.
But this song shows how all the technique can be used in the language of music. This is so inspiring to me. This is creativity! This is music! This is the drums!!
